ధన్వంతరి

పాలసముద్రంలో మందరపర్వతాన్ని అమృతం కోసం దేవతలు, రాక్షసులు చిలికినప్పుడు అమృతభాండాన్ని ఒక చేతితోనూ, శంఖువును మరొకచేతితోనూ, మూలికలు, చక్రం మిగితా చేతితులలో ధరించి ఆశ్వయుజ బహుళ ద్వాదశి నాడు ఉధ్బవించాడు ధన్వంతరి అంటూ పురాణ కధనం. ఈయన శ్రీ మహా విష్ణు అంశ.

సుశ్రుతుడు ఈ ప్రపంచంలో తొలి శస్త్ర వైధ్యుడు(world's first surgeon).1120 రోగాల గురించి,700 మూలికల గురించి,శరీరం గురించి,300 రకాల శస్త్ర చికిత్సల(300 types of surgeries) గురించి,120 surgical instruments గురించి సవివరంగా వివరించిన గ్రంధం అది. అది 6 BC కంటే ముందే రచింపబడిందని తెలుస్తొంది. ధన్వంతరి మహర్షి ప్రజాహితం కోసం ఉపదేశించిన ఆయుర్వేదతంత్రాన్ని అనుసరించి తన పేరిట సుశ్రుతసంహిత రచించినట్లు సుశ్రుతుడు తన రచనలో పేర్కొనాడు.ధన్వంతరి లక్షశ్లోకాల ఆయుర్వేద శాస్త్రాన్ని ఉపదేశించాడని, ధన్వంతరి ఆయుర్వేద మూలపురుషుడని సుశ్రుతుడు చెప్పాడు.

మన దేశంలో 3000 ఏళ్ళ క్రితమే తొలి ప్లాస్టిక్ సర్జరి(plastic surgery)జరిగింది. ఆ కాలంలోనే తోలి open heart surgery జరిగింది. అది 36 గంటలపాటు జరిగిందని, అలాగే cataract operations కూడా మొట్టమొదటిసారిగా 3000 ఏళ్ళ క్రితమే అనేకం జరిగినట్టు గ్రంధాల ద్వారా స్పష్టం అవుతోంది. ఇలా అనేకం కనిపిస్తాయి. వీటన్నిటికి మూలం ఆయుర్వేదమే. అటువంటి ఆయుర్వేదాన్ని ప్రచారం చేసిన వారు ధన్వంతరి.

వ్యాస మహాభారతంలో మనకు వైద్యానికి సంబంధించిన విషయాలు కనిపిస్తాయి.భీష్మ పర్వంలో బాణాల చేత గాయపడిన భీష్ముడు అంపశయ్యమీద ఉన్నప్పుడు ఆయనకు చికిత్స చేయడానికి శస్త్రచికిత్సలో(surgery) నిపుణులైన కొంతమంది శస్త్రవైద్యులు(surgeons)తమ పరికరాలతో(surgical instruments) భీష్ముడి శరీరం నుండి బాణాలు తీయడానికి రాగా భీష్ముడు "అంపశయ్య మీద పడుకున్న నాకు ఈ చికిత్స చేయించుకోవడం ఇష్టం లేదు.క్షత్రియుడైన(warrior)నేను నా బాధ్యత సక్రమంగా నిర్వర్తించాను.యుద్ధంలో పోరాడి ఉన్నతమైన స్థానాన్ని నిలుపుకున్నాను.ఇప్పుడు నాకు వైద్యులతో (physicians and surgeons)పని ఏంటి?అందువల్ల వారికి తగిన ధనం ఇచ్చి గౌరవ మర్యాదలతో సాగనంపండి"అని పలుకుతాడు.అక్కడికి physicians and surgeons అందరు వచ్చారని మనకు మహాభారతం చెప్తోంది. మహాభారతం జరిగి 5000 సంవత్సరాలు దాటింది.అంటే అంతకు పూర్వమే మన దేశంలో వైద్య శాస్త్రం(medical science) ఎంతో గొప్పగా అభివృద్ధి చెందింది.

"ఆయుర్వేదం శ్చికిత్సాశాస్త్రం ఋద్వేదస్యోపవేదః"

అంటే ఆయుర్వేదం అనే చికిత్సా శాస్త్రం ఋగ్ వేదానికి ఉపవేదమని శౌనకుని చరణవ్యూహం పేర్కొంది.

ఇంత గొప్ప వైద్య విధానం మన భారతీయుల సొంతం.ఆయుర్వేదం కేవలం ఉపవేదమే కాదూ మన భారతీయ ఋషుల గొప్ప ఆవిష్కారం. allopathy కూడా నయం చేయలేని ఎన్నొ రోగాలను ఆయుర్వేదం ద్వారా నయం చేయవచ్చు. మన పండగలలోను,మన హిందూ సంప్రదాయ వస్త్ర ధారణలోనూ,వంటకాలలోనూ ఆయుర్వేదం తనదైన ముద్ర వేసింది. అంతేందుకు 3 సంవత్సరాల క్రితం ప్రపంచమంతా స్వైన్ ఫ్లూ(swine flu) వ్యాపించింది. భారతదేశంలో దాని వల్ల జరిగిన నష్టం తక్కువనే చెప్పొచ్చు. అది మన దేశంలో వ్యాపించకపోవడానికి ఒక కారణం తులసిమొక్క,రెండూ మన వంటకాలని ఒక విదేశి వైద్య బృందం చెప్పింది. ఈ రెండు కూడా ఆయుర్వేదం ద్వారానే వాడుకలోనికి వచ్చాయి. అంతేకాదు ఆహారంలో పసుపును ఉపయోగించి క్యాన్సర్(cancer) ను అరికట్టవచ్చని,కొత్తిమీరను వంటల్లో వాడి food poisoning ను అరికట్టవచ్చని ఆయుర్వేదం చెప్పడమే కాదు మనం ఆచరించేలా చేసింది.ఇప్పుడు మనం వాటిని వంటల్లో వాడుతున్నామంటే అది ఆయుర్వేదం కారణంగానే.

అటువంటి ఆయుర్వేదాన్ని భారతీయులం మరచిపోయాం.అమెరికా వాళ్ళు పసుపు క్యాన్సర్ ను అరికడుతుందని అది తామే కనుగొన్నామని చెప్పుకుని పసుపు మీద "పెటెంట్"పొందారు.అదే కొత్తిమీర విషయంలో కూడా జరిగింది. అంతేకాదు మన ఋషులు చెప్పిన ఆయుర్వేద గ్రంధాలను ఎత్తుకుపొయి 30,000 ఆయుర్వేద మూలికల మీద "పెటెంట్స్"పొందింది ఆ దేశం.వేప,కలబందల గొప్పతనం,ఔషధి గుణాల గురించి ఆయుర్వేదం, భారతీయులు చెప్పినంత గొప్పగా ఇంకేవరు చెప్పలేదు.అటువంటి వేప, కలబందను మన ప్రభుత్వం ద్వారా అధికసంఖ్యలో తమ దేశానికి తరలించుకుపోయి వాటి మీద పెటెంట్స్ పొందింది చైనా. ఇలా భారతదేశం మీద bio-piracy యుద్దం ప్రకటించాయి. కాని మనం ఏమి పట్టనట్టు, మనకు సంబంధం లేని విషయమైనట్టు భావిస్తున్నాం. మన దేశ మేధాసంపత్తిని(intellectual property) ఇతర దేశాలు దొంగిలించిపోతుంటే సిగ్గులేకుండా చూస్తూ కూర్చున్నాం. ఇప్పటికైన మనము,రాజకీయనాయకులు కళ్ళు తెరవాలి,మన భారతీయ సంపదను కాపాడుకోవాలి.

మన భారత సంస్కృతి ప్రకృతిలో మమేకమైన, ప్రకృతిలోని ప్రతి జీవిని, వస్తువును, దైవంగా భావించి జీవనగమనంలో ముందుకు సాగమని చెబుతుంటుంది. అందుకే నాడు రోగాలు, రుగ్మతలు కూడా తక్కువే ఉండేవి. ఏమైనా రోగాలు దాపురిస్తే, అందుకు తగిన, ప్రకృతి సహజంగా లభ్యమయ్యే మూలికలతో వైద్యం చేయబడేది. ఘనమైన మన చరిత్రలో ఎంతో మంది వైద్య ఘనాపాఠీలు ఉన్నపటికీ, ధన్వంతరీ, సుశ్రుతుడు, చరకుడు, వాగ్భటుడు, కశ్యపుడు, జీవకుడు, నాగార్జునుడు వంటి వారు ప్రముఖంగా కనిపిస్తుంటారు.

ధన్వంతరీ

‘ వైద్యో నారాయణో హరిః ’ అని అన్నారు. వైద్యుడు సాక్షాత్తు నారాయణ స్వరూపమని, అనుభవజ్ఞుడైన వైద్యుని ‘ అపర ధన్వంతరి ’ అని మన వాళ్ళు పోగడుతుంటారు. శ్రీమద్భాగవతం ధన్వంతరిని “దృఢమైన శరీరంతో, పొడవైన చేతులతో, నలుపురంగు శరీరంతో, ఎర్రని కళ్ళతో, \ పసుపువర్ణదుస్తులను ధరించి, వివిధ రకాల ఆభరణాలను అలంకరించుకొని దర్శనమిస్తూంటారు” అని వర్ణించింది. ఇలా పలు పురాణాలు ఆయన అవతారగాథను వివరించాయి. భాగవతపురాణం ప్రకారము, క్షీరసాగరమధనం ద్వార ధన్వంతరి ఆవిర్భావం జరిగింది.

రాక్షసులు పెట్టే బాధలను భరించలేకపోయిన దేవతలు బ్రహ్మ దేవునితో మొరపెట్టుకోగా, ఆయన శ్రీహరిని ప్రార్థించమన్నాడు. అందరూ శ్రీమన్నారాయణుని ప్రార్థించగా క్షీరసాగరమథనము చేస్తే ఫలితము ఉంటుందని చెబుతాడు. అలా వారు విష్ణుదేవుని సలహాననుసరించి గడ్డి, తీగలు, ఓషధులను పాలసముద్రములో వేసి, మందరపర్వతం కవ్వముగా, వాసుకి తాడుగా, కవ్వం కిందుగా కూర్మావతార విష్ణువు ఆధారంగా ఉండగా, ముందుగా హాలాహలం పుట్టగా, దానిని పరమశివుడు కంఠములో ధరించాడు. అనంతరం కామధేనువు, ఉచ్చైశ్శ్రవం, ఐరావతం, కల్పవృక్షం, అప్సరసలు, చంద్రుడు, లక్ష్మీదేవి, వారుణి కన్య ఉద్భవించారు.

ఆ తర్వాత పొడవైన చేతులతో, శంఖం వంటి కంఠంతో నడుముకు పట్టుపుట్టం, కంఠాన పూదండలు, ఎర్రటి కన్నులు, నీలమేఘ శరీరం, చెవులకు రత్నకుండలాలు, కాళ్ళకు రత్న మంజీరాలలో ఓ దివ్యపురుషుడు ఉద్భవించాడు. సకల విద్యా శాస్త్రాలలో నిపుణుడైన అతని చేతిలో అమృతకలశం ధగధగలాదుతోంది. ఈ విధంగా భాగవత పురాణం ధన్వంతరి ఆవిర్భావాన్ని వర్ణించింది.

ఇక, విష్ణుధర్మోత్తరపురణం, ఒక చేతిలో అమృతకలశం, మరొక చేత వనమూలికలు పట్టుకొని ధన్వంతరి దర్శనమిచ్చినట్లు చెప్పబడింది. కొన్ని పురాణాలు ఆయన వనములికలకు బదులుగా జలగలను పట్టుకుని ఉంటాడని పేర్కొన్నాయి. రామాయణంలో కమండలం, దండం నుంచి ధన్వంతరి ఉద్భావించాడని చెప్పబడింది. ఆయన నాలుగు చేతులతో దర్శనమిస్తూ, పై రెండు రెండు చేతులలో,శంఖు, చక్రాలను ధరించి, క్రింది రెండు చేతులలో జలగన్ఉ అమృతకలశాన్ని పట్టుకుని ఉంటాడని కొన్ని పురాణాల కథనం.

దేవవైద్యుడైన ధన్వంతరి భూలోకానికి వచ్చిన ఉదంతాన్ని గురించి హరివంశంలో వివరించబడింది. కాశీ రాజైన దీర్ఘతమునికి చాలా కాలంపాటూ సంతానభాగ్యం లేక పోవడంతో విష్ణుమూర్తిని వేడుకుంటూ ఘోరమైన తపస్సును చేసాడు. అప్పుడు స్వామి దీర్ఘతమునికి ధన్వంతరి కొడుకుగా పుట్టేవరాన్ని అనుగ్రహించాడు. అలా దీర్ఘతముని ఇంట మానవరూపములో జన్మించిన ధన్వంతరి దేవ లోకంలోని వైద్యవిధానాలను మానవలోకానికి అందుబాటులోకి తెచ్చాడని ప్రతీతి.

బ్రహ్మవైవర్తపురాణం, ధన్వంతరి భూలోకానికి వచ్చిన తదనంతరం జరిగిన సంఘటనలను వివరిస్తోంది. ఒకానోకసారి ధన్వంతరి, తన శిష్యులతో కలసి కైలాసపర్వత దర్శనానికి బయలుదేరాడు. దారిలో వారిని అడ్డగించిన దక్ష అనే పాము, తన పడగలను విప్పి బెదిరించింది. ధన్వంతరి శిష్యులలో ఒకడు దూకుడుగా ముందుకు వెళ్ళి దక్ష పామును పట్టుకుని ఓ మంత్రమును పఠించడంతో, ఆ మంత్రప్రభావానికి దక్ష పాము మూర్ఛ పోయింది. ఈ విషయాన్ని గురించి విన్న పాములరాజు వాసుకి, ద్రోణ, పుండరీక అనే క్రూర పాముల నాయకత్వంలో కొన్ని వేల పాములను ధన్వంతరి శిష్యులపైకి పంపాడు. ఆ పాముల సైన్యం తమ విషంతో ధన్వంతరి శిష్యులంతా మూర్చపోయేట్లు చేసాయి. అయితే ధన్వంతరి ఆయుర్వేద మూలికలతో తన సిష్యులనంతా మూర్ఛ నుండి తెరుకునేట్లు చేసాడు. ఈ సంఘటన వాసుకిని మరింత ఆవేశానికి లోను చేయగా, ధన్వంతరితో పాటు అతని శిష్యులను నాశనం చేసేందుకు మానసాదేవి అనే పాములరాణిని పంపాడు. మానసాదేవి తన విషాన్ని ఎగజిమ్ముతుండగా, ధనవంతరావిషానికి విరుగుడు చేసాడు. తదనంతరం మానసాదేవికి, ధన్వంతరి మధ్య భయంకరమైన యుద్ధం మొదలైంది. ఆ యుద్ధజ్వాలలకు సకల లోకాలు కంపించిపోసాగాయి. సరిగ్గా అప్పుడు వారి మధ్య శివుడు ప్రత్యక్షం కాగా, తన తప్పును గ్రహించిన వాసుకి పరుగుపరుగున వచ్చి శివుని పాదాలపై వాలిపోయాడు.

ఇలా ధన్వంతరి గురించి అనెక్ పురాణకథలను వింటూంటాం. శస్త్ర చికిత్సలో (ఆపరేషన్స్) ఉద్దండుడైన దివోదాసు ధన్వంతరి వంశావళిలో నాలుగవ తరానికి చెందినవాడు.

శ్రీధన్వంతరి మూలమంత్రం

ఓం నమో భగవతే మహా సుదర్శన వాసుదేవాయ

ధన్వాతరయే అమృత కలశ హస్తాయ సర్వభయ వినాశకాయ

సర్వరోగ నివారనాయ త్రైలోక్య పతయే త్రైలోక్యవిధయే

శ్రీమహావిష్ణుస్వరూపాయ శ్రీ ధన్వంతరీ స్వరూప

సుశ్రుతుడు

శస్త్రచికిత్స అనేతప్పటికీ మనకు ముందుగా గుర్తుకొచ్చేది సుశ్రుతుడే. సుశ్రుతుడు ఓ గొప్ప శస్త్రచికిత్సా నిపుణుడు. గొప్ప గురువు, సుశ్రుతుడు ప్లాస్టిక్ సర్జరీకి ఆద్యుడనిపేర్కొనబడుతోంది. ఆశ్చర్యకరమైన విషయమేమిటంటే, సుశ్రుతుడు హిపోక్రెట్స్కు ఓ వంద సంవత్సరాలు ముందుగా, సెల్సియన్ మరియాగాలన్ ల కంటే రెండు సంవత్సరాల ముందుగా ఈ భూమిపై ఆపరేషన్లు చేశాడనేది యదార్థం. సుశ్రుతుడు ఓ గొప్ప వైద్యపరంపర నుంచి వైద్యాన్ని నేర్చుకుంటే, దివోదాసుడు నుంచి సుశ్రుతుడు వైద్యవిద్యను నేర్చుకున్నాడు. సుశ్రుతుని కీర్తి దేశదేశాలకు పాకింది. ఆయన రాసిన వైద్య గ్రంథాలు ముందుగా అరబిక్ భాషలోకి అనువదించబడి, అరబిక్ భాష నుండి పర్షియన్ భాషలోకి, ఆ తదనంతరం మిగతా భాషలకు విస్తరించాయి. సుశ్రుతసంహిత రెండు భాగాలను కలిగి ఉంది. మొదటి భాగం పూర్వసంహితగా, రెండవభాగం ఉత్తర సంహితగా విభజింపబడ్డాయి. 184 అధ్యాయాలుగా విభజింపబడిన ఈ గ్రంథంలో 1,120 రుగ్మతలను గురించి ప్రస్తావించబడటమే కాక, వాటికి సంబంధించిన చికిత్సాపద్ధతులు కూడ వివరించబడ్డాయి.

అయితే, ఆయన ఇన్ని విధాలైన వైద్యవిధానాలను సూచించినప్పటికీ, ఆయన మధుమేహ, ఊబకాయాలను తగ్గించే వైద్యునిగానే చాలా మంది గుర్తుపెట్టుకుంటున్నారు. ఆయన కాశీలో నివసించినందువల్ల ప్రస్తుతం బెనారెస్ హిందూ విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో సుశ్రుతుని విగ్రహం ప్రతిష్టించబడింది.

చరకుడు

సుశ్రుతుడు శస్త్రచికిత్స నిపుణుడైతే చరకుడు ఆయుర్వేద వైద్యుడు. ఏ రోగికి ఏ మూలిక తగినదన్న విషయాన్ని నిర్ణయించడంలో నిష్ణాతుడు. ఆయన శాస్త్ర చికిత్సావిధానాల్లో అనేక అద్భుతాలు చేశాడు.

ఈయన గర్బస్థశిశువు పెరుగుదల గురించి, మానవ శరీర నిర్మాణము గురించి స్పష్టమైన వివరాలు అందించాడు. వాత, పిత్త, కఫములను అనుసరించి చరకుడు శరీరంలోని ఆరోగ్యస్థితిని అంచనా వేసేవాడు. అదేవిధంగా రోగాలను నిర్థారించడమే కాదు, వాటికి తగిన చికిత్సా పద్ధతులను సూచించడంలో కూడా ఘటికుడు చరకుడు. ఈయన వృద్ధాప్యాన్ని వెన్నక్కి మళ్లించే మూలికలను కూడా అందుబాటులోకి తెచ్చాడని ప్రతీతి.

ఆయనచే విరచితమైన ‘చరక సంహితి’లో పలు విధాలైన మూలికల వివరాలను, చికిత్సా విధానాలను చూడొచ్చు. కొన్ని కొన్ని సందర్భాలలో చరకుడు వైద్యం చేసేందుకు లోహథాతువులను, జంతు సంబంధ పదార్థాలను కూడా ఉపయోగించేవాడట. మందులు ఉపయోగించే పద్ధతిని అనుసరించి చరకుడు ఆయా మందులను 50 రకాలుగా విభజించాడు. మందులను పొడిరూపంలో, జిగురుగా, ద్రవరూపంలో తాయారు చేసిన చరకుడు ఆ మందులను ఉపయోగించాల్సిన విధానాన్ని గురించి చాల వివరంగా పేర్కొన్నాడు.

వాగ్భటుడు

పూర్వకాలంలో వృద్ధత్రయీ అని పేర్కొనబడినవారిలో వాగ్భటుడు ఒకరు. మిగతా ఇద్దరు ఆత్రేయుడు, సుశ్రుతుడు. ఈయనచే విరచించబడిన ప్రఖ్యాత వైద్యగ్రంథాలు అష్టాంగ సంగ్రహం, అష్టాంగ హృదయం. సింహగుప్తుని కుమారుడైన వాగ్భటుడు సింధునదీ పరివాహక ప్రాంతములో జన్మించాడు. అవలోకితుడు అనే బౌద్ధగురువు దగ్గర వాగ్భటుడు వైద్యవిద్యను అభ్యసించాడు. అయితే వాగ్భటుడు పుట్టుకతో హిందువే అయినప్పటికీ, జీవన ప్రస్థానంలో హిందూ ధర్మాన్నే అనుసరిస్తున్నప్పటికీ, తనయొక్క గ్రంథాలకు ముడు మాటగా చెబుతున్నప్పుడు బుద్ధుని స్మరించుకుంటాడు.

ఈయన అష్టాంగ సంగ్రహం భారతదేశ పర్యంతం చదువబడింది. ఈయన తన కాలంలో లభ్యమైన వైద్యగ్రంథాలన్నింటిని పరిష్కరించి అందరికీ అందుబాటులో ఉండేట్లుగా చేసాడు. చరకుడు, సుశ్రుతుడు చెప్పినవాటిని చక్కగా పరిష్కరించాడు. ఈయన ఋతువులను అనుసరించి చేయాల్సిన దినచర్యల గురించి, ఋతుచర్యల గురించి వివరించాడు. వీటిని పాటించడంవల్ల ఆయుర్ వృద్ధి జరుగుతుందని ప్రయోగాత్మకంగా తెలిపేవాడయాన.

ఈయన రాసిన అష్టాంగ సంగ్రహంలో 6 అధ్యాయాలు, 150 విభాగాలున్నాయి. మొదటి అధ్యాయంలో శరీర నిర్మాణము, గర్భము ధరించినప్పుడు తీసుకోవలసిన జాగ్రత్తలు, ప్రసవ సమయములో పాటించవలసిన పద్ధతులు, మూడవ అధ్యాయంలో మధుమేహం, చర్మ వ్యాధుల నివారణలను గురించి, నాలుగవ అధ్యాయములో ఆయా వ్యాధులకు తగిన చికిత్సా పద్ధతులు, ఐదవ అధ్యాయంలో చిన్నపిల్లలకు వచ్చే రోగాలు, మూర్ఛలు, పిచ్చి గురించి, వాటి నివారణ పద్ధతులను గురించి వివరించబడింది.

కశ్యపుడు

కశ్యపుడు పిల్లలకు సంబంధించిన విద్యావిధానంలో, ప్రసూతి వైద్య విధానామలో నిష్ణాతుడు. ఈయనచే విరచిత్రమైన గ్రంథం ‘కశ్యప సంహిత’ ప్రశ్నోత్తరాల రూపంలో ఉంటుంది. ప్రసూతి వైద్యంలో కశ్యపుని కృషి గణనీయమైనది. ఆయుర్వేదానికి సంబందించిన ఎనిమిది విభాగాలలో కశ్యపుని కృషి అనితరసాధ్యం.

కశ్యపుడు పిల్లల పెరుగుదలకు సంబధించిన ఎన్నో సూచనలను తన గ్రంథంలో అందించాడు.

జీవకుడు మెదడు, నరాలకు సంబంధించిన వైద్యనిపుణుడు. బౌద్ధ గ్రంథాలలో ఈయన వైద్య విధానాన్ని గురించిన ప్రశంసలను చూడగలం. బింబిసారుని కాలానికి చెందిన జీవకుడు ఒక కుప్పతోట్టిలో కనిపించాడని, రాజుకు ఈ విషయం తెలిసి, ఆ పసికందును ఆస్థానానికి రప్పించి జీవకుడు అనే పేరు పెట్టాడని చారిత్రిక కథనం. పెరిగి పెద్దయిన జీవకుడు తక్షశిలలో వైద్యవిద్యను అభ్యసించాడు. ఏడేళ్ళ పాటు సాగిన ఆ విద్య ముగిసిన అనంతరం, అతనిని గురువు పిలిచి, తక్షశిలకు వలయాకారంలో ఎనిమిది మైళ్ళ పర్యంతంలో వైద్యానికి పనికిరాని మొలకను తీసుకురమ్మానాడు. జీవకుడు గురువు చెప్పిన ప్రకారం, ఒక యోజన పర్యంతము తిరిగి, అటువంటి మొక్క కోసం వెదకి, వైద్యానికి పనికిరాని మొక్కను కనిపెట్టడం తన వల్ల కాదన్నాడు. అప్పుడు అతని అర్హత పట్ల సంతృప్తి చెందిన గురువు, అతనిని ఆయుర్వేద వైద్యం చేయడానికి అనుమతిని ఇచ్చాడు.

అనంతరం జీవకుడు నరాలకు సంబంధించిన వైద్యాన్ని చేసేందుకు సాకేతపురానికి చేరుకున్నాడు. వైద్యవృత్తి ద్వారా జీవకుడు బాగా ధనవంతుడయ్యాడు. అనంతరం ఒకానొక సమయంలో జీవకుడు బుద్ధునికి కూడా వైద్యాన్ని అందించాడు. ఒకప్పుడు బుద్ధుని కాలికి రాయితగలగా గాయమైంది. అప్పుడు జీవకుడు కొన్ని మూలికలను గాయముపై పూసి, కట్టు కట్టాడట. ఆ కట్టు ఓ కాలపరిమితి తర్వాత విప్పి వేయాలి. కానీ, ఆ సమయంలో జీవకుడు వేరేపనిపై పొరుగూరుకెళ్ళాడు. అప్పుడు జీవకుడు బుద్ధునితో మానసిక తరంగాల ద్వారా సంప్రదించి, అక్కడనుంచే బుద్ధుని కాలికి కట్టివున్న కట్టును ఎలా విప్పదీయాలో చెప్పి, అలాగే చేయించాడని ప్రతీతి. అప్పట్నుంచి బుద్ధుడు, జీవకుని తన ప్రధాన శిష్యులలో ఒకరినిగా నియమించాడు. జీవకుడు కూడ బుద్ధునికి ఆరోగ్యపరమైన సలహాలను ఇస్తూ ఆయన ఆరోగ్యాన్ని జాగ్రత్తగా కాపాడుతుండేవాడు.

నాగార్జునుడు
